वैदिक पंचांग के अनुसार, हर साल कार्तिक महीने की अष्टमी तिथि के दिन मासिक कालाष्टमी व्रत किया जाता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि मार्गशीर्ष मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी के दिन काल भैरव भगवान का जन्म हुआ था। इसलीए इस दिन को काल भैरव जयंती/Kaal Bhairav Jayanti के नाम से भी जाना जाता है या इसे कालाष्टमी भी कहते हैं
