Though players can pet their dog in Diablo 4, some requirements should be met to trigger the initial animation.

Judging from what Blizzard has revealed concerning the game, and from what players have experienced in the betas and server slam, Diablo 4 will probably be a much more brutal game than its predecessor. But that's not to say that there is not any good left within the world of Sanctuary – small things here and there bring some levity to its otherwise overwhelmingly dark atmosphere.

In most major towns and settlements, players will find dogs wandering around the streets. They don't do much but walk from destination to spot, and walking as much as one it's not immediately obvious that there is anything players can perform with them. As it turns out, there is a secret animation that lets Diablo 4 players pet dogs they are available across – but only when they follow a few specific steps.

How To Pet Dogs in Diablo 4

The initial step to pet your dog in Diablo 4 is to locate one. In just about every settlement that disables combat abilities, players will find at least one dog skulking about, usually near NPCs. When players walk as much as one, though, they will not react whatsoever, with no prompt pops up like in other games that permit players to pet their dog.

Instead, wait for your dog to stop moving, if this will stand still for some seconds before walking elsewhere. Make sure your character is touching your dog and facing it, it does not matter which direction your dog is facing, though.

Finally, mention the emote wheel – by either pressing E around the mouse and keyboard or up around the D-Pad having a controller – and select the "Hello" emote. Confirm the emote, then exit the wheel. If the player is facing your dog, their character will offer you greetings towards the pup when they bend right down to give them a great scratch.

This doesn't confer any bonuses towards the player or anything like this, but it is always nice to have interaction with your four-legged friend in games – particularly in a game as dark as Diablo 4. As a unique animation that can't be triggered every other way, it's worth looking at during these previous couple of days of beta testing or once the full game launches on June 6, 2023 (available a couple of days earlier for individuals who preordered).
