Gun control is considered as one of the most controversial topics of discussion in the United States and the world at large. Various parties have different opinions on whether gun control is necessary. However, recent cases of gun violence and the shooting of innocent individuals in the public events and institutions have proved the necessity to implement stricter gun control. According to Alters, increased access to firearms has made killing easier, more efficient as well as impersonal. Moreover, failure of the society to have proper strategies to control gun use is equal to breeding crimes and later searching measures to control them. Allowing untrained people to possess firearms tends to put others at risk of getting hurt or killed. Thus, gun violence in the United States in the recent years has claimed more than seventy thousand people. Therefore, the problems of gun violence and gun-related deaths can only be solved through stricter gun control laws and policies. Consequently, despite the claims that gun control violates human rights, stricter control of the use of guns is vital for the society because it will decrease crime and death rates by reducing the number of guns in the hands of perpetrators and untrained individuals.

Gun control is needed in the society today because it will reduce the cases of homicide in the country. According to Chapman et al., more guns in the hands of the public are equal to more homicides and injuries at large. At present, there is a large number of people who own guns illegally in America in addition to those who have licensed firearms. However, regardless of the acquisition process, the possession of weapons poses some dangers to the owners as well as the community. Thus, there were numerous cases in the past where individuals accidentally shot themselves or caused fatal or non-fatal injuries to themselves or other people when they pulled the trigger unknowingly. This is one of the reasons why gun control is very important within the US as it will reduce these incidences, thus safeguarding the entire society.

Gun control is also likely to curb the cases of robbery with the use of violence, where the offenders use guns to commit the crime. It is not strange that most people who own guns illegally use them to plan their vices. They tend to take advantage of the fact that they are protected by weapon to slay their victims (Hill 23). As a result, there is a fear in the business society as well as the whole community since no one knows when he or she can be attacked. What is worse, the attackers can be having the illegal firearm without the authorities’ knowledge (Dukakis and Mitchell 26). The resulting scenarios are the cases where people are shot at the supermarkets, buses, parks, and even schools and colleges. Consequently, to reduce robbery incidences and boost security in the society, gun control must be implemented.

Additionally, gun control is important within the society because it will help to reduce the incidence of suicides. It was a traditional belief that individuals who committed suicide first planned it just as a person is planning a wedding (Chapman et al. 365). However, this belief has been changed with the increased number of people possessing guns. Today, many people end their lives whenever they feel depressed, disappointed, downplayed or undergo a difficult situation and suffering in their daily lives without planning or thinking twice (Kleck 29). The availability of guns has made it easier for such individuals to commit suicide as they do not need to plan and search for ways to kill themselves because the use of a gun has made it spontaneous and instant. Therefore, the only way to reduce the number of people committing suicide using guns is to have a proper gun control measures.

Moreover, gun control will help save lives lost as a result of the mishandling of firearms by the owners. There are people who decide to buy firearms with no proper intention. As a result, they just store the weapon, not considering the effects of a single shot from the gun. The end result is often the death of people. On the same note, many people have also been injured by gunshots rendering them useless as they cannot do things they used to do before (Alters 56). Moreover, keeping guns at the reach of children has cost considerable pain to some families (Kleck 1447). For instance, incidences where children accidentally short themselves or their parents were recorded in the recent past. The reason for the increase in such cases is poor handling of guns by the owners. People no longer undergo training and orientation before they are given guns. As a result, they lack the skills and knowledge of how to handle as well as keep this weapon. It is lack of such skills that makes people kill themselves and others. Moreover, because of the same reason people store guns in places that can be accessed by children, leading to the increased death of young people. Hence, the public support gun control so that such incidences can be prevented.

Furthermore, gun control is required within the society to bring an end to the massacres committed using firearms. In the recent past, many criminals utilized legal weapons such as guns for killing people. There were many cases where an individual went into a supermarket, entertainment event and even school and opened fire on innocent people, who had not done any wrong to them. The increase of these incidents has been possible because of an easy access to guns in the society (Alters 66). As a result, people find it simpler to kill without thinking about the consequences. The citizens are, therefore, insecure in whichever places, whether public or private. Hence, the safety of the individual is really compromised by this freedom of possessing guns (Kleck et al. 513). The only way that this epidemic can be solved is by implementing proper gun control strategies within the society.

Stricter gun control is required in America today because it will improve the safety of children both at home and at school. Many children lost their lives at home due to a gunshot that went astray from their parents or neighbors. In the event of domestic violence, some parents tend to defend themselves using guns, and more often than not the children are caught in the crossfire, injured or killed (Kleck et al. 26). The same incidences occur where young people are killed by neighbors who might be fighting with one another and using guns. Furthermore, cases such as the one witnessed in 2013 in Chicago, where a gang opened fire on a crowd, demonstrate that children are at risk of losing their lives because of gunshots. These cases are just examples of several cases of reported gun violence that have taken the lives of many people across the United States.

Additionally, stricter gun control should be established on the sale of guns within various states of the United States. The increased retailing of firearms has increased the probability of gun mishandling since one can easily acquire firearms. Therefore, because there are already too many guns in the hands of irresponsible people, the possibility of acquiring new guns should be limited to save more lives (Willy 15). Due to the lack of proper background checks in most of the retail shops selling guns, ill-intentioned people can easily acquire these weapons (Wozniak 278). In addition, the fact that gun sale is being carried out as any other business has made even young people to be exposed to guns. Parents acquire guns from retailers and later teach children how to use and operate them. As a result, everyone depends on their guns for safety instead of the established security forces, which further leads to increased insecurity as other people do not use the firearms responsibly.

Gun rights proponents argue that having a stricter gun control will violate their rights to protect themselves. They assert that in case of military invasion, the public will only have one way to defend themselves, and that is through their guns. Moreover, according to gun rights advocates, having a stricter gun control will make people powerless when they face a greater threat in the future. Other groups of gun rights proponents tend to believe that the use of the words “assault weapons” is a mere political term meant to tarnish ownership of weapons as well as cause commotion among the public. Therefore, they believe that gun control should not be implemented as it has no use in the society.

Even though there are many arguments pointing out that gun control is not necessary in the society, the increase of deaths caused by guns shows the dire need to have proper gun control within the society. Moreover, the United States has experienced numerous gun shootings and massacres in the recent past as a result of the lack of stricter gun control (Alters 56). There is no value larger than human life; therefore, the major argument for stricter gun control is the number of deaths, sadness and problems caused due to lax gun control. In addition, the belief that there will be a military invasion of the country is a mere myth as no country, especially the superpower such as the USA, will experience such events. Consequently, people should focus on resolving the current issues caused by guns and wholeheartedly welcome the need to have proper gun control within the society.

It is evident from this discussion that gun control is necessary in the modern society because it will decrease crime rates by reducing the number of guns in the hands of bad people and untrained individuals. All the reasons outlined in the paper confirm that gun control is a great move since many lives have been lost due to gun operations. Moreover, there are people who accidentally shot themselves or others and still kill other people using firearms. It is also true that gun violence has been on the rise, and its control would help combat the crimes such as robbery with violence and murder. Therefore, the gun control policy will help to reduce such cases and restore the safety of the society. Additionally, suicidal and homicidal cases related to gun ownership will also reduce in number and consequently result in reduced deaths and injuries. The gun control initiative will ensure children do not grow with early exposure to guns, thus reducing the cases of childhood injuries and killings amongst children using guns. The gun control is, therefore, of great importance for the security and safety of the United States.
