Ninja Gaiden 2

There wasn't much hope for an action game to top 2008's Xbox version of Ninja Gaiden, but then along came Ninja Gaiden 2. Although sharing its main combat system of light and heavy strikes and inputs reminiscent of fighting games, Ninja Gaiden 2 has a very different atmosphere from its forerunner. It was much more linear, the action was practically constant, and a new health system would replenish your health at the conclusion of every fight encounter up to a certain amount. This resulted in furious battles where the end of each one was a relief. Although its level design wasn't as good as the original's, Ninja Gaiden 2 nonetheless managed to make the cut because to its fluid animations, exciting gameplay, and satisfying fights.

Anyone unfamiliar with the genre of action games could look at Vanquish and exclaim, "Hey, that's not an action game, that's a third-person shooter!" And to that I say, look, let's be honest: if you're playing Vanquish like a regular third-person shooter with a heavy emphasis on taking cover, you're doing it incorrectly. You won't find any other genres in Vanquish save action, and it's one of the finest action games out there. Constant mobility, the adept use of your special abilities—in this case, your high-speed dash and the power to momentarily slow down time—and familiarity with certain opponent kinds and how best to destroy them are essential, as they are in most action games. This is Platinum Games at its finest, and there has been nothing else like it.

God of War 3

When it comes to the "classic" God of War games, God of War 3 is the apex. Style that appears to be defined by brutality at first glance but, upon closer inspection, reveals startling levels of planning and forethought. Almost every foe had unique design quirks, and Kratos might use this information to his advantage in combat or to gain an advantage over his opponents. To name just a few examples: the gorgon's petrification stare could be parried and used against other enemies, smaller enemies could be used as battering rams for safe damage, Minotaurs could be executed at any time for a health boost when needed, harpies could be grappled to in order to stay in the air and avoid dangerous situations on the ground, and so on. God of War 3 stands out not only for its impressive action, but also for being the whole product. One of the most graphically spectacular games of the PS3 period, with fantastic action, a gripping plot that brings a trilogy to a satisfying close, incredible soundtrack, and a stunning visual style.

Due of the difficulty in choosing between the two Bayonettas, we have placed them on positions 7 and 6 concurrently. If you're looking for an excellent action game, go no farther than Bayonetta. The game's action is extreme, difficult, and aesthetically pleasing, but what really sets it apart is how much it values a well-rounded understanding of both offensive and defense. Having a solid defense in most action games means you take less damage and, at best, have a chance to strike first. Nevertheless, in Bayonetta, executing a flawless dodge activates Witch Time, which slows down the action and allows you to deliver far more damage. That makes for an exciting form of fighting that relies not just on constant activity but also on the thrilling sensation of dodging a powerful blow.
