The event will take place in the same manner as previous anniversary celebrations, with a major addition. A new weekly challenge will test players against The Burning Crusade world boss with WoTLK Classic Gold, the Doomwalker in addition to new rewards like Doomwalker Trophy Stand toy Doomwalker Trophy Stand toy as well as the Illidari Doomhawk mount. The introduction of the Doomwalker is in line with the announcement of Burning Crusade Classic, a new version of the game's debut expansion earlier in the year.

The anniversary event will also see the return of the original version of the game's Alterac Valley battleground. The players who achieve the achievements related to the battleground could earn two mounts--the Stormpike Battle Ram for the Alliance and the Frostwolf Snarler for the Horde.

Blizzard operates three different WoW games: the current Shadowlands game, WoW Classic (which comes to begin receiving seasonal servers at the end of October), and Burning Crusade Classic.

WoW director of games Ion Hazzikostas recently spoke in an interview about the need to update the game's 17th anniversary for contemporary players. Many changes to the older content came due to multiple sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits filed against Activision Blizzard. Hazzikostas has said that Azeroth is "an ever-changing and dynamic world," and that changes are being implemented to ensure Azeroth is more representative of both its values as a development team and the values of its playerbase in 2021.
