The Southeastern Conference has been regarded as the nation's premier college football conference. If Saturday was any indication, the rest of the country has caught up.Top-ranked Alabama did its job with a dominating 52-6win over No. 20 USC. But the rest of the conference left a lot to be desired. The SEC is living off a distorted reputation of being a deep conference because of nine claimed national championships since 2003. But those titles have been won by only four of the league's 14 teams Alabama (four), LSU, (two), Florida (two) and Auburn (one). It's a top-heavy league, yet SEC teams continue to be overrated in preseason polls. The SEC placed six teams in the preseason Top 25 polls, including four teams in the top 12 of each poll. It's unlikely to stay that way after LSU lost to unranked Wisconsin and Tenne see struggled Sammy Watkins Jersey to beat Appalachian State at home. While LSU running back Leonard Fournette ran for138 yards on 23 carries, he was held in check in the Austin Corbett Jersey first half beforegetting on track late. The Badgers, who won 10 games last year, dominated for most of the game and, had it not been for a handful of failed red-zone po se sions two short field goals, end-zone interception and turnover on downs the game would not have been close. Despite being unranked and, against an overrated team from the SEC, the Badgers were clearly the better team at Lambeau Field.BENDER: LSU ranked in the top 10 isn't the first time an SEC team entered the season ranked much higher than it should be. Auburn entered the 2015 season ranked sixth before losing six games and finishing the year unranked. The Volunteers would also fall into that category. Tenne see entered the year ranked in the top 10 (9th AP. 10th Coaches) but neededsome luck Thursday night to beat the Mountaineers. After the Vols rallied just to force overtime with 10 second-half points, quarterback Joshua Dobbs fumbled into the end zone. Running backJalen Hurd was alert and dove on the ball to give Tenne see a 20-13 victory. Now, Tenne see supporters will point out that the Mountaineers won 11 games last year in their first full season in the Sun Belt. The rest of college football fans will state the fact that Appalachian State transitioned from the FCS level to FBS just two years ago.But it just wasn't at the top of the rankings where the SEC struggled. The rest of the conference was far from impre sive on the opening weekend. It started Thursday night with a grotesque game between South Carolina and Vanderbilt with the Gamecocks rallying from a 10-0 hole to claim a 13-10 victory in Nashville. It was a sloppy game full of penalties and dropped pa ses and the best players were the punters and Gamecocks kickerElliott Fry, who booted a 55-yard field goal to win it.MORE: Mi si sippi State blew a 17-point lead and lost 21-20at home to South Alabama. If Deacon Jones Jersey you're keeping score at home, that's two SEC teams having difficulty against Sun Belt teams.No. 25 Florida had a tough time putting away Ma sachusetts as the Minutemen hung with the Gators at the Swamp well into the fourth quarter. Florida eventually pulled away UMa sfor a 24 Nolan Cromwell Jersey -7 victory, but it wasn't easy. UMa s will get two more chances to knock off SEC teams with games that now look winnable against Mi si sippi State in Foxborough and South Carolina.Kentucky got smoked at home againstSouthern Mi s, which beat an SEC team for the first time since 2000 with a 44-35 victory atCommonwealth Stadium in Lexington.Another Conference USA team, Louisiana Tech, almost pulled off another upset, but Arkansas rallied to beat the Bulldogs. La. Tech led most of the second half untilAustin Allen's 4-yard touchdown pa s toJeremy Sprinkle capped a 13-play drive to give Arkansas a 21-20 win.Auburn wasn't able to overtakeNo. 2 Clemson, despite a late rally, as Clemson left Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 19-13 road win.Mi souri suffered a 26-11 defeat at West Virginia despite forcing three turnovers. The Tigers also forced West Virginia's starting quarterback, Skyler Howard, out of the game with a rib injury, but Mizzou's offense couldn't do anything against a West Virginia defense with nine new starters. Mizzou lost its season opener Andrew Whitworth Jersey for the first time since 2001 as West Virginia snapped a five-game losing streak to SEC schools. It wasn't all bad for the SEC with No. 18 Georgia beating No. 22North Carolina 33-24, and Texas A&M holding off UCLA, ranked 16th by media and 24th by coaches, for a 31-24 overtime win. But quality wins by SEC teams were hard to find this weekend.Ole Mi s, ranked 11th in the AP poll and 12th in the Coaches poll, can help the conference close the weekend on a high note with an upset of No. 4 Florida State. But even a win by the Rebels Monday night won't erase what was an underwhelming Week 1by the SEC.Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
