Two of those patients celebrated with Conner on Thursday night at the College Football Awards Show."His comeback started mine," ESPN broadcaster Holly Rowe said through tears as she helped introduced Conner, who received the Disney Spirit Award. Rowe and ESPN colleague Shelley Smith, who are cancer survivors (ESPN analyst Rod Gilmore, who also was mentioned during the introduction, is in treatment), shared the stage with Conner, who returned to the field this season after being diagnosed with a tumor in his chest.Conner, too, was choked up during an interview with Tom Rinaldi, whose moving review of Conner's battle aired prior to the award presentation."When you've got cancer, it don't care if you're black or white or anything. It comes and it comes hard, so you're just like everybody else. I'm no better than nobody else," Conner told Rinaldi. "(I) Buffalo Bills Jackets play football and I get this exposure, but there's people out there fighting and they don't get this. They don't get to receive any awards if they win and when they win, so this is for all of us."Moments before Conner, Smith and Rowe share a post-interview hug, Conner talked about their connection as well as his devotion to all patients."We have a bond that can't be broken. We're best friends now," Conner said. "And everbody else going through this, they've got a friend in me.
